Roman aqueduct in Genazzano

In the luxuriant Elcini Park in Genazzano one can still make out the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct, restored by the Colonna family as a water supply for their castle (built on the ruins of the “Gencianum” estate, which belonged to the Gens Genucia (Genucia Family) which gave its name to the town).

The last part of the aqueduct, which was also used as an access bridge to the north side of the castle, was destroyed by bomb raids during the Second World War. A single span bridge was later rebuilt in reinforced concrete by the Engineering Corps.

The ancient aqueduct channelled the waters of the Colle S. Andrea spring right into the Palace fountain where all the village population would go and draw water
