Believed to be very ancient – perhaps even as early as the 3rd century - the Roman Cistern in Segni was once used as a reservoir for water for human consumption.
It is built out of large blocks of tufa cemented with a particular kind of quicklime found in this area, known as "Opus Signinum", very sought after in antiquity and for which the people of Segni were particularly renowned and led to them being called into to work on Roman patrician villas. The distinctive feature of this quicklime lies in its resistance, along with its waterproofing properties.
Occasionally used for the traditional “piglet joust” fair, now the area of the Cistern has become an ideal and very charming location for shows and concerts.
