At km. 64.600, by the ‘fosso delle Guardiole’ lie the remains of a thermal bath complex and other interesting structures belonging to a seaside Roman villa which boasted a remarkable series of fish pools which extended along the coast for almost 400 metres. The largest fish pool was made up of a single rectangular pool but with the side facing the sea shaped in a semicircle.
The entire complex is now almost completely submerged and therefore only clearly visible from the air. The Villa, built in the vicinity of the settlement of Castrum Novum, faced directly onto the via Aurelia, which at this point has turned out to be 5.3 metres wide. The recent excavations have brought to light rooms that can be assigned to two main construction stages, one towards the end of the 1st C. and another at the beginning of the 2nd C. In one room there are still traces of a black and white mosaic floor design.
