According to recent research the gate, which in actual fact is a triumphal arch, dates back to around 1600, when Marzio Colonna renovated a large part of the village.
Originally it was probably a monument built to celebrate Marcantonio Colonna’s victory in the Battle of Lepanto which even his father, Pompeo Colonna, had a part in.
Great skill has been deployed in the combination of the tufa rock and marble used to make the gate. Roman archaeological finds, brought to light during the excavations carried out by the Colonna near the village and in Roma have been incorporated into the structure.
These elements consist of bas reliefs, marble busts, small statues and other decorations.
