Rural Culture Museum - Roviano

The “Rural Culture Museum of the Aniene Valley” was founded around a previous exhibition – the first in the Lazio Region of a demo-ethno-anthropological nature – which had resulted from a combination of a collection of objects and actual research carried out on location. This led to the first exhibition in 1980, subsequently renewed and improved over the following decade.

The new exhibition has been structured around theme sections which envisage in the first instance, on the ground floor, the presentation of themes related to “The Land and the Castle”, “Religious Traditions”, “Tunnel workers” and “Craft knowledge”, all illustrated through traditional popular objects which cover a broad chronological spectrum.

The current exhibition lay out attempts to link together the history of the Museum itself, the local territorial context – including the Baron’s Palace that hosts the Museum – and the various aspects of material culture. To this end the exhibition has been conceived with the aim of giving the collection a ‘soul’ through various museological devices: the setting up of zones with sound commentary, the setting up of various domestic and work environments, the exploitation of scenic arts to transfigure certain rooms, the projection of films and slides, often on unconventional supports, the use of textural structures (such as earth and stones) which ideally connect the objects to their territory.

What’s more, in order to set up a connection with the castle and trigger an emotional impact, a number of reproductions of significant art works on show in the “Civic Museum of Contemporary Art” of the nearby village of Anticoli Corrado, have also been included.
