The history of the complex begins almost 1,000 years ago, as a simple fortified construction overlooking the lake, property of the Counts of Tuscolo. The castle extended around the Major or Saracen Tower which is still standing.
In 1572, Nemi was bought by the Frangipane family who carried out remodelling work on the fortified building, separating the palace from the castle.
1n 1781, the Frangipane family sold the territory to Luigi Onesti Braschi, nephew of Pope Pius VI, who elevated it to ducal status and restored the building.
Giuseppe Valadier was entrusted with the work, he built the Braschi wing behind the Major tower, raising and expanding the previous constructions.
In 1901, the palace was bought by the Ruspoli family, who carried out the last architectural modification, the Renaissance Revival façade with scarp wall on via del Plebiscito.
In the 1990s, Princess Ruspoli sold the palace to a private company who carried out large scale restoration work, recovering much of the pictorial decoration.
