This like so many other towers along the coast, was designed and built during the 16th C., in answer to the invitation made by Pope Pius V to the large families of the area, to see to the defence of the coast against the raids by Turkish pirates.
The Caffarelli owned an estate in the area and exchange for privileges they undertook to built the tower which, according to certain sources, was designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti. Ended in 1570, it was considered the most beautiful, and termed the “Pompous” by the pirates themselves.
The tower is thirty meters tall and square in shape. It has a very sturdy base with tilted walls; the walls are very thick and access was gained to it, as it is today, by means of a ramp and a drawbridge. The visit to the castle is interesting and evocative and once again provides evidence of the defensive role played by Ardea and its territory at various times in history.
