These catacombs are located along the Appian Way,15 miles out of Rome on the site of an earlier pozzolana quarry. The founding of the cemetery in the ancient quarry took place between the 3rd and the 4th C. AD.
The fame of catacombs was mainly due to the presence of many saints and martyrs.
In the crypt there are a number of frescoes, including the one of Christ among the benefactors and the Alban Martyrs (5th C. AD, early 6th C.), the one featuring S. Senatore, who gave his name to the Catacomb (4th – 6th C. AD), a medieval fresco showing Christ Pantocrator between S. Smaragdo and the Madonna (11th – 12th C. AD.); finally there is another frescoe located on the apse of the smaller crypt.
All the archaeological finds that have been recovered from the crypt are on show in the Civic Museum of Albano.
