Facciata del Santuario della Madonna del Buon Consiglio a Genazzano

In Genazzano, there used to be an old 10th-century church where today the Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel stands.
The existing church was redesigned and enlarged between 1621and1629.
The façade is decorated with six Ionic pillars. Our Lady is depicted at the centre of the tympanum, Pius IX on the left and Leo XIII on the right.
In the centre of the window at the rear of the church by S. Canevari, Blessed Stephen among plague victims; above left the Augustine Coat of Arms and that of the Community of Genazzano on the right. The marble portal is from the 15th Century; The Virgin and Child carried by two angels is carved into the tympanum.
The interior of the church is majestic and harmonious with its marble adornments, airy arches, golden-stucco covered central vault and bright, penetrating light.
The balustrade was made by Bernini, or one of his school, and was donated to the Sanctuary by the Irish Augustinian Fathers (1954).
The high altar is enriched with precious marble. The presbytery frescoes are by Monti and Piatti (1880-82).
The chancel was made from solid oak by Raffaele Gonnella and son (1777); the fine-marble pulpit (1631) and the entrance staircase, made from a single block of marble, is from 1928.
