This important scientific structure was designed in 1939 and completed in 1965. It sits on top of the ruins of a first-century Roman villa.
The impressive, rationalist construction was initially used to hold equipment belonging to the National Observatory of Rome. It subsequently became a structure which circulated news of astronomical and scientific findings
As part of the initiatives undertaken to improve and spread knowledge gained from astronomy, a new didactic section was introduced; “Astrolab”, the interactive multimedia laboratory for Astronomy, which makes use of multimedia and interactive tools: the structure is located within a building situated close to the so-called "cupola degli scozzesi" (Scots’ dome) and is made up of three rooms. Each room is dedicated to a different topic: the Solar system, the Galaxy and the Universe.
It was the setting for the film about the “boys of Via Panisperna”, which starred Enrico Fermi and Ettore Majorana.
