The Severiano amphitheatre in Albano Laziale was built by the craftsmen of the Albana Legion during the first years of the 3rd C. A.D. on the North Eastern side of the Castra, where perhaps once stood the ancient Alba Longa(raised to the ground by Rome in the 7th C. b.c.), effectively occupying a portion of the grounds of Domitian’s grandiose villa which he had had built here at the end of the 1st C. A.D.
Of this imposing elliptical structure (originally around 22 metres high), a part was excavated out of the rock and the rest built up using masonry. What is now still visible is the first floor and some of the entrances.
When the camp was closed by Constantine, the amphitheatre was abandoned and initially used as a quarry for materials and subsequently as a cemetery.
Every year, in June, an important historical evocation takes place in honour of the Legio II Parthica, through which one can get an idea of the feeling and the lively emotions that used to permeate this site.
