Sforza Cesarini Palace - Ardea

Browse fullscreen [x]

Built by the Colonna family in 1421, it is located on the site of the ancient tower of Ardia. It was subsequently converted into a fortress. It used to be accessed across a masonry bridge that spanned a blind moat dug out of the tufa rock.

Along with its fortified hanging garden it formed the ‘Fortezza della Rocca’, a small citadel isolated from the rest of the Acropolis and protected by mighty battlements which can still be seen today. According to statutory agreements, in case of danger the inhabitants of the community of Ardea had the right to find shelter within its walls.

The palace was severely damaged during the Second World War. All that remains today are the very charming ruins of the ground floor, the walls and the battlements. According to an ancient popular tradition the palace is haunted by the ghost of the famous captain Ludovico Colonna, who was murdered here by his brother-in-law who knifed him in the throat in 1436.
