The Tuscia Romana area celebrates St. Egidio Abate with numerous events taking place in the towns of Tolfa and Canale Monterano.

The little town of Tolfa will be buzzing all week long with the celebrations for St. Egidio, in a delightful mix of tradition, local folklore, music and good food.

The festival this week starts on Tuesday 28, as Tolfa meets up with the folklore groups of its twin towns, while from Thursday onwards, with the Cena di Gala del Drappo dei Comuni (Gala Dinner of the City Hall Standard Flag), the rituals dedicated to the Palio di S. Egidio will commence, culminating in the thoroughbred horse races on Saturday, September 1 and the Palio di S.Egidio featuring the local half-bred horse race on Sunday, September 2.
Friday, August 31 is the day dedicated to religious ceremonies, with Holy Mass and the Procession, while Saturday, after the Gara del V drappo dei Comuni (Race of the 5th city hall standard flag), the NOBRAINO band will take the stage! On the same day, September 2, Canale Monterano also offers two opportunities to explore its ancient history and its enchanting natural beauty:

“Con i piedi nel Mignone”(Paddling in the Mignone), an excursion, organized by the Cooperativa Lymph@, from the ruins of the Monterano old-town, where Bernini worked, to the River Mignone, following one of the routes that connected (and still connects) the town with this river, which was also mentioned by Virgilio. After the excursion, the meeting point is La Tavernetta, for a convivial meal. Difficulty: medium to easy. Length 5 Km. Duration: one half-day. Cost  6 euro.

“Sulla scia del Mignone”(In the wake of the Mignone),  a photography exhibition, by Stefano Cioffi, on the land and the people who live on the banks of this small river in the province of Rome. The initiative is sponsored by the province of Rome and by the Town of Canale Monterano.  Cioffi’s work initially focused on the lost traces of memories still cherished by the elderly inhabitants of the villages located on the banks of the river. He sought them out, witnessed their various activities, approached them in their homes. But the artist soon realized that he was disregarding the current life of the area, a new generation, vibrant with energy and committed to seeking resources to re-appropriate its own history, to rediscover an identity linked to the towns. Thus arose the idea of associating with a rugged, dramatic and hostile landscape, a series of portraits and images of the new generation populating this area around the Monti della Tolfa (Tolfa mountains).
