In the Campetto area of Ardea, in front of the medieval ditches, there is a very interesting underground crypt. This was an ancient pagan sanctuary which later became a Christian oratory. The original shrine was probably dug in 200 BC, as indicated by the opus signinum flooring, and was dedicated to a cult of water nymphs. The monument has been conserved in its original form, it is reached by a staircase whose ceiling is decorated with brightly coloured mortar tiles applied to the sandstone.
At the foot of the stair is a well which was probably connected to a pagan divinity. One apse holds a painting of an Enthroned Madonna with Child with two female figures representing Benediction and Grace.
There are frescoes, including one of two knights piercing a dragon which is probably a reference to St. George and St.Demetrius.
The paintings, inspired by both the Byzantine and Western traditions, date to 12th Century. The oratory is a true jewel of culture and art.
