For the fourth year running FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund) and Pierreci-Codess Coopcultura have organized an interesting "Viaggio nel gusto" (Taste Trip) in the park of the Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli, during which visitors will discover what our ancestors ate, what foods were used in the kitchen in bygone times and how they were consumed.
The event, which will be held on Sundays from July 22 until September 2, 2012, offers two possibilities: that of discovering the history and evolution of tastes and cuisine throughout the course of the centuries and, at the same time, that of being able to taste a number of foods that were popular in recent and not so recent times.
In the course of the evenings, a special tour of the Villa Gregoriana will be organized during which details will be provided, not only on the history of the park itself, but also on dietary habits and the “etiquette” in use in the various historical periods, particularly focusing on the ingredients initially used in the kitchen and those introduced later as a result of changing tastes, fashions and geographical discoveries. The public will then be guided through an unusual dinner-tasting of “historical” foods, during which each course will be preceded by the reading of the original recipe and by anecdotes and curiosities connected with the same.
Visitors will thus have a unique opportunity to taste some of the dishes typically found on the tables of the past, from ancient to modern times: they will, for example, be teletransported from a starter typical of ancient Rome to a medieval dish, moving on to a tasty main course extremely popular during Renaissance times, to finish off with a nineteenth century dessert.
All of the courses proposed during the "Viaggio nel gusto" are backed up by documentary proof – being the work of personalities very much in the public eye during their own era – and they will be served on a table set with reproductions of period ceramics.
