Theodoli Castle - San Vito Romano

Browse fullscreen [x]

Theodoli Castle in San Vito Romano has an unusual shiplike shape, which is emphasised by the high bank that surrounds it and continues into Corso Mario Theodoli like a prow.
The complex structure is the result of the addition of a series of buildings that have slowly been assimilated. The nucleus of the castle was built in the 9th century by the inhabitants of Verugine and Vitellia who had fled the Saracen pillagers. The gate to the Borgo was built at the foot of the fortress to protect the town from the west. The castle was enlarged at the end of the 13th century.
The building changed radically, as did the town, in 1643 under Marquis Alfonso Theodoli, and his brother Cardinal Mario. He levelled the differences in the land from the castle through the gate and in so doing created the long, smooth road named Via Borgo Mario Theodoli.
Carlo Theodoli continued the work of Cardinal Mario, reorganizing the interior and decorating the sumptuous Gallery and the apartments created in the two new wings with frescoes.
The NeoGothic front in the square by the Church of St. Mary de Arce dates back to the end of the 19th century.
