The Tolfa Mountains are not very high; in fact the tallest in the group, the Mountain of Graces, only reaches 616 metres.
However, this is where the real Maremma of Latium begins. The Tolfa woods are filled with different species of trees while the undergrowth consists of wild fruit, mushrooms, truffles, aromatic herbs and flowers.
Typical of the area are the buttero, or cowboys, who ride Maremmano horses and breed long-horned Maremma cattle.
The enchanting countryside has well preserved wild areas, characterised by the beautiful colours of the changing seasons.
Towns on the Mountains include Allumiere, established in the 15th century following the discovery of allum in the area, and Tolfa. Tolfa and the Frangipane Fort were established in the 9th century when Saracen raiding forced the population to flee to the hills for survival.
