The Bell Tower of S. Maria in Trivio is one of the most famous in Italy for its height and state of conservation.
The name Trivio was given to it because three streets open out onto the square in front of the church but it is more commonly known as the “Belltower of S. Maria” because it was built as a bell tower for this church dedicated to S. Mary of the Assumption.
Erected during the first period of the Italian artistic renovation, the Tower is the work of the famous “Maestri Comacini” (Comacine Masters) known as the “Magistri” (Master Stonemasons).
The tower now is over 40 m high; originally it was not isolated from the church and it was only detached from it in 1622.
