Villa Chigi - Ariccia

Browse fullscreen [x]

Attached to Villa Chigi there is a vast park, covering 28 hectares, which dates back to the 16th C., rich in lush vegetation, archaeological finds, fountains and craftworks of the 17th C., the last fragment of the “nemus aricinum” dedicated to Diana.

Known originally as the “Barco”, meaning an enclosed area earmarked for hunting, this garden is a precious anticipation of what will later be known as the “landscape” or “romantic” garden owing to its naturalistic and pictorial qualities. During the course of the 18th and 19th C. the park was one of the favourite destinations of the Grand Tour and was reproduced in many paintings by artists such as Hackert, Corot, Turner, Ivanov, etc.,  and recalled in the writings of Goethe, Stendhal and D’Annunzio. Among the monuments the most important are the Aviary built by Savelli (1628) and the imposing monument of the age of Tiberius in honour of the Roman propraetor of Mesia, which was originally on the Appian Way and was reassembled here in 1997.
